Be The Change St. Maarten has provided funding for six children from foster homes to train as park rangers with Nature Foundation St. Maarten. The program will introduce the youngsters to environmental and marine conservation.
The children will receive basic environmental, conservation and marine biology education, be involved in clean-up activities, habitat restoration work, species conservation (including sea turtle management), cave research and small boat handling skills. They will be taught snorkeling techniques and will eventually be certified as SCUBA divers.
Author of the Incomplete Wildlife Guide to St. Maarten Mark Yokoyama will host sessions for the youngsters in wildlife photography, nature walks, professional guiding and a small expedition to collect and document terrestrial wildlife.
This experience will give the children a complete package in becoming local naturalists and may intrigue them to seek careers in the field in their future.
