An artists’ residence, what is it ?

L’Artocarpe in Guadeloupe is primarily a space for creativity in the field of contemporary art. The focus is on bringing theoretical input to artist practices so as to increase chances to get more international exhibitions. In no cases we rush to have a « show » for exhibition sake !

Artists are invited to experiment new avenues for their work, reflect on new angles and try new disciplines, media to express themselves.

All exhibition events organised by or in partner with L’Artocarpe will seek to challenge the process of displaying artwork, as well as, seek to deeper the discourse that is linked to the pieces. The aim being that content and forms come to some deeper meaning than just what is being presented and continue to address topics of our contemporary life.

The PROGRAM for the residence

The project « De cadre…encadrent » consists of integrating a first series of 4 artistic frames in the urban and natural space of the city of Moule in Guadeloupe. Thanks to 4 different colours (or more according to the evolution of the project) these frames will emphasize reality :

– as it was, to remember and/or see what has to be seen,

– as it could be, to dream about it and embellish it,

– as it is, to guide the passers-by,

– as it should be, or as it should not be, to respect life and its surroundings.

It is both a project of Land Art and Street Marketing which is aimed at everyone.

Now that the theoretical part is nearly accomplished, I need to develop the artistic and practical parts of the project by creating prototypes in order to evaluate the reality of the creation of the project.

To know more about the project, use the following link : http://www.florencepoiriernkpa.com/images/stories/projet_de_cadres_encadre.pdf

Within the residence, in order to exhibit the project and discuss about its relevance, its evolution, and the conditions of its feasibility, I plan to offer open meetings : to the artists, the artistic institutions, the general public of Moule and the members of l’Artocarpe.

Finally, to materialize the project and develop it temporarily or perennially on different Caribean territories, the prototypes will be settled in the space of the city of Moule and photographs will be taken.

I schedule to inaugurate officially the spaces of the city of Moule where the frames will be settled (temporarily) in January or February 2015…

WHO AM I?

I was born in Bordeaux on the 7th of December 1972. I live and work in Saint-Martin.

I studied Applied Arts since High School (Bac F12 Lycée Charles de Coulomb Angoulême), and continued my studies with two years in preparation for the competitve examination of the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Cachan (ENSET Cachan). I entered this school in 1993 in the section C Applied Arts and Visual Arts. I was a student of Guy Rachel Grataloup, Claire Brunet, Paul Ardenne, Jean Claude Lebenstein and Richard Conte from 1993 to 1997.

I taught Visual Arts in Cameroon and in Guyana where I also worked as graphic designer in the CRDP. With Gérard Grig I am the co-author and illustrator of the educational book « Touloulou. Devine qui je suis ? » in 2006.

The same year, I settled down in Saint-Martin (French West Indies) and created my entreprise of jewellery-making « ATYPIQUE ».

In 2010, I founded the organisation HeadMade Factory. (www.artsxm.org ) and I worked simultaneously on the development of my artistic approach based on the place of determination in the act of creating. The moment of creation both in the here and now and throughout time arouses my interest for art. This moment is an integral part of the constant quest for the link between the intention of creation and the creation itself.
