Sint Maarten. Courir ou marcher pour contribuer à lutte contre le cancer de l’utérus

100414-5K10KraceThe American University of the Caribbean located in Cupecoy hosts a variety of clubs in which the students participate. The Honor & Service Society is one such club and its members are committed to striving for academic excellence while also focusing on community involvement by supporting local organizations.

Each semester, the Honor & Service Society members select a local charity organization to receive the proceeds of a fundraising event organized and facilitated by the members of the society. This spring, they have chosen a local grassroots organization, The KeLaHa Projects, whose mission is to bring awareness to cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in developing countries; however, it is preventable and can be effectively treated if discovered early. The KeLaHa Projects is working on Sint Maarten to bring awareness to the causes of cervical cancer and the ways to prevent and treat it. The AUC Honor & Service Society hopes that their efforts to put on this fundraiser will not only raise funds, but will also let people know that this organization is here and is doing great work to protect the health of men and women of the island.

The event is a 5K/10K walk/run that begins and ends at Sunset Beach Bar this Saturday morning, April 12th. Registration begins at 6:00am and the race begins at 7:00am. The cost is $15 for the 5K and $20 for the 10K, and a T-shirt is included for the first 100 racers who sign up. After the race, prizes will be awarded to the winners, and a small snack will be provided (courtesy of Sunset Beach Bar and Zee Best Bakery). There will also be an opportunity to learn more about the KeLaHa Projects and meet with the president of the organization, Keoma Hamer, a local Sint Maartener who has an ambitious dream for this organization and has already taken much action to bring it to life.

Even if you do not participate, we encourage all to come out, meet the KeLaHa staff members, and see what the project is all about. Prizes and speeches begin at 9:00am. Many people plan to stay at Sunset for breakfast after the event to enjoy the rest of the morning.

Sponsors of the event include Sunset Beach Bar, ZeeBest, Buccaneer Bar, TriSport, and T-Shirt Maxx. Prizes for runners were donated by Bajatzu Bar & Grill, Byblos Lounge, Tutta Pasta, Jimbo’s Rock & Blues Café, Thai Savanh, Papa Dan’s, Fat Tony’s, RendezVous Lounge, Privé, Top Carrot, Pineapple Pete’s, and Seaside Nature Park. Come out and support this local organization on Saturday morning and help bring awareness to cervical cancer.
