Editorial – Election campaign getting stronger and already breaking the rules

The election campaign is obviously on everyone’s lips, which is to be expected. During the second mandate, a new – or partially new – team will either rely on the foundations laid by the previous one or endeavour to destroy them.

We would all like to focus on substantial topics, but the shape of the debates is regulated.

This short editorial is a civic-minded approach – which is that of SXMINFO since being set up – to remind the candidates that not everything can be done to meet their ambitions.

Of course, broadcasting a pre-election television show on a private cable is not a scandal in itself. Only three of our candidates – all elected officials of the Collectivité – attended the show, while others probably saw it coming or tried to avoid the reprimands of those who strictly comply with the electoral Code.

But limits were exceeded since the moderator of this meeting was none other than a civil servant of the Collectivité (civil servants are normally subject to the duty of neutrality) who is involved in politics and whose leader was on the set.

Beyond the unusual protocol (invitations were sent on the eve of the meeting), those who did not take part in the show were probably right to refuse this mock debate.

Now, we can have substantial debates, but we have to play by the rules of the electoral Code!
