Mesdames, Messieurs, Chers Amis,

Daniel GIBBS

English Version

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,

The year that has just ended was particularly difficult and painful for all. It was also an opportunity to show that the French people could be united on essential points by showing a republican spirit which is deep-seated and strongly alive.

I hope we will also follow this example in our community: unity in the cooperation with Sint Maarten, unity in the search for solutions that can reduce unemployment, which particularly affects our young people, and finally in pursuing a common objective of security for our island.

I extend my warmest encouragements to our gendarmes, our policemen, our firefighters, to the volunteers of various associations who do a good job in helping our youth, and also to the actors of the economic and social world. I do not forget all those who are in the field of education, of healthcare, or in the judiciary system. Finally my warmest wishes go also to every individual who works day after day to diminish the insecurity that undermines our tourism industry and to make St Martin a better place.

Our Island needs consensus to further its projects, as regards to the economy or the society. Living together in unity is essential for all the communities in our island in order to move forward. We have to prove wrong to the pessimists who constantly blame others for our problems. First and foremost it is with promising projects of hope, able to unite all the actors of Saint-Martin that we will illustrate the spirit of unity that is sometimes lacking.

Let us revive the motto of the “Friendly Island” from the obsolescence in which it appears to be today.

This is my greatest wish for my island and its inhabitants. I finally extend to all of you my best wishes of health, happiness and success in all your endeavors for 2016.

Daniel GIBBS
